The Slow Life

34
When the weather largely does not change over the course of the year, do you feel less motivated? Do you feel that you do not get as much done?

I grew up in the tropics, so such a thought had never crossed my mind. However, a few years back, a co-worker mentioned to me that she loved living in the Pacific North-West. She needed seasons to get motivated. "Now it's time to cut fire-wood for the winter, now it's time for spring cleaning, etc. I just can't imagine living in a place with no change in seasons!" "Silly," is what I thought. I would trade thinking about 'cutting wood' for a day on the beach in a heartbeat. I would not miss doing any of that!

Just recently though, a good friend of mine posted about just that. He had read an article saying that island-people (in the tropics) live a slower life because they do not have to think ahead to survive (eg. they do not have to worry about starving if they do not can their tomatoes for the winter). That does seem to have a good amount of logic in it. And if I delve deeply into my inner psyche, that does explain some of my personality traits! (I won't delve into those just yet. . . )

Let me know your thoughts. Is the island pace just right, or is it slowing you down?
