How About Those Sprouts?

34

The next healthy island project is developing a garden of my own (okay, okay, I’m not doing it ALL on my own—you could say I’m supervising). Since before my big move to my new hot and humid habitat, I had planned several major projects for a pleasant lifestyle.

#1 A Garden!
#2 A Chicken Coop for Laying Hens!
#3 A Compost Bin!

I am so excited to have gotten started! I now have a compost bin composting some kitchen scraps. The design was based off of this website.

The finished product is a stack of 5 gallon buckets with some worm holes. The weather has been quite hot (perfect for composting) so I trust the buckets will work like a charm. One thing I am a little disappointed in, is that I cannot get my hand on any red wriggler worms. This bin was originally designed for indoor use, but without the rapidly composting red wriggler worms, I will have to stick to the good old-fashioned stinkier outdoor composting. Because of the stray dogs rampant around here, it is worth having my compost confined in a bucket. We will see how it turns out.

The other advance is in the sprouting seeds. The weather and soil here is amazing. We used rabbit manure from my landlord’s rabbits to add an extra kick to the soil. The end result?  Look at all the progress in ONE week!! These spouts were dry seeds exactly one week ago—amazing! I can almost hear them growing. I thought about doing some time-lapse photography to watch them grow. If only it was the weekend, I might have given it a try.

These bean sprouts should hit the garden this weekend. We are planning on building a trellis for them. I am soooo excited! Some of the other seeds need a little more time before they sprout--but no worries, I am sure they will be up and running in a short while.

So the last thing on my list is a chichen coop. And that will be a whole new adventure. . .
