Farmer's Market

34
A nice Saturday market is nice anywhere. Our city is no exception.

Today we ran the gambit from fruits and veggies to meats and fish. This is in anticipation of a big meal planned for Sunday. One big pawpaw (papaya) only 3EC ($1US), same for a big bag of ripe guava. Now, I'm not good about wheeling and dealing, but I am sure there is some haggling that goes on as well.

One delicious morsel we picked up is this awesome sun melon (see pic). You can see where it gets its name. We're saving it for Sunday. On the other hand, I already cracked into the watermelon I bought. Can't beat it.

Yes, some of our fruit are green. For example, the pawpaw and figs (green bananas). They will sell them green because they can be cooked the way they are. I personally am a fan of ripe sweet succulent fruit. The trick is to ask whether the fruit was meant to ripen. Some fruit is picked so young, that they will never ripen--they will just turn brown after a while. But the older, more mature fruit (especially if they have reached their full size) will eventually ripen. The farmers will know how many days it they will take to ripen.
